Home Fire Statistics from SERVPRO of Bellaire

8/9/2022 (Permalink)

House fires affect more than 374,000 homes each year and smoking is the leading cause of fire related death. House fires are devastating and they cause more than 7 billion dollars in damage in the United States each year.

It is important to know ways that you can reduce your family's risk of experiencing a house fire. Below is a list of a few things you can do:

  • Do NOT smoke in bed or anywhere in your home for that matter. People lay down while smoking a cigarette and fall asleep causing more fire related deaths than any other cause worldwide.
  • Unplug appliances that are not in use. Certain appliances have auto on features that keep them on all the time so you can turn them on right away. These appliances can catch fire when left plugged in.
  • Keep clothing and debris off power strips. Make sure your children do not leave clothes on power strips as the clothing can catch on fire.
  • Unplug irons and flatirons for straightening your hair. When you leave the bathroom unplug your flat iron. Do not walk away to do something else before unplugging it, because you could forget.
  • Iron and use your flatiron on a flat surface. Do not leave irons or flatirons on soft surfaces that may catch on fire.
  • Keep portable heaters away from all cloth and clothing. Make sure they are on a flat stable surface and cannot tip or be knocked over by children. Heating elements are the second leading cause of house fires.
  • Do not walk away from food while cooking even for a brief period of time. Make sure that you turn pot handles so that children cannot grab them dumping scalding contents which can burn them or start a fire.
  • Use baking soda to extinguish grease fires as water will make them spread.
  • Keep batteries in your smoke detectors and test them frequently.
  • Make a fire escape plan with your family, especially if children are on a different floor.
  • Call 9-1-1 if your home catches on fire!!!

Knowing these tips will help keep you and your family safe. If you do experience a house fire call SERVPRO of Bellaire at 713-266-9294. We are fire restoration specialists.

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allow us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Bellaire will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

SERVPRO Customer on Experiencing a House Fire

8/2/2022 (Permalink)

A Houston, TX homeowner and SERVPRO customer received a call no one wants to receive from neighbors telling her that her home was on fire. The family had just left to get something to eat when they received the call. The neighbors in her tight knit community called the fire department before contacting her, but the fire moved fast and a significant amount of damage was done in the short time it took for the fire department to arrive.

Returning home, they were devastated to find their home completely burned and that they had lost nearly all of their possessions. In the moments after the fire the family learned that the fire also took their family pets and they were devastated.

During this difficult time the last thing the family wanted to do was have to clean the damage from the blaze. Having a company like SERVPRO to handle this for them allowed them to process the tragedy away from the home. It took months for the family home to be rebuilt and for them to cope with the loss of their beloved pets, but slowly life returned to normal for them.

They now live happily in their rebuilt home and the homeowner shared that she tried to find the positive in the situation as that was the best way for them to cope with the fire.

While rebuilding the family was able to add two additional rooms to their family home, giving each of their children their own room. This is something that helped the family as they tried to get back to life before the fire. The homeowner says anyone experiencing a fire should try to stay positive and that it might take a while, but that life will return to normal.

Mold? Signs of Water Problems?

7/27/2022 (Permalink)

Long term moisture problem example. Long term moisture problem example.

If you have had any long-term moisture problems in your house it's usually inevitable, they will lead to mold beginning to grow. So, if you know you've had some water problems in your home then it's a pretty good sign you could have mold.

Some signs that you have a moisture problem include water stains or discoloration on walls, floors or ceilings in your house. Seeing these could be a clue that there is mold growing within or behind the material.

Another sign of a moisture problem is surface abnormalities like peeling, bubbling or cracking of the paint or wallpaper. If your walls are bowed, bulging or warped it probably means moisture has gotten into them. Another clue is if the surface of walls or other materials feel damp.

What to do when a broken pipe floods your home.

7/18/2022 (Permalink)

What to do when a broken pipe floods your home.

When it comes to water in the home due to a broken pipe, many homeowners think that they can fix it with just a few special tools and a little elbow grease. There are plenty of advice on how to handle the problem but you must consider things to avoid mistakes and get the job done right.

  1. Shutting of the flow water is merely the first step. Time is very important. You need to get all the water out of your home as quickly as possible. Water damage remediation cannot wait until tomorrow.
  2. When flow of water stops, don’t assume that the damage will end. Water is always on the move, it goes everywhere and damages almost everything touches like Harwood floors, subflooring, molding and walls, carpets, wooden furniture and cabinets. Untreated broken pipe can lead to a mold problem.
  3. Don’t overlook the risk of electrocution. Water connecting with electricity increases the possibility of electrocution and fire.
  4. Examine your water damage coverage. Call your agent. Don’t assume that your insurance won’t cover the flooding.
  5. Don’t hesitate to call a professional. Water damage from a broken pipe is not just DIY matter, sometimes it can be a serious matter. There are skilled ad well-equipped water damage remediation specialists ready to come in and restore your home.

For comprehensive 24/7 water damage response, you can count on the experience of our team. Call SERVPRO of Bellaire  at (713) 266-9294.

THINGS THAT INFLUENCE THE COST OF A WATER DAMAGE

7/18/2022 (Permalink)

THINGS THAT INFLUENCE THE COST OF A WATER DAMAGE

Water damage continues even after the flood water is gone, unlike the kind of damage caused by wind or impact that’s why it has to be addressed as soon as possible. If your home is damaged by water, here are three factors that may impact the cost of damage repair.

  1. Square footage

It will take more time, materials and labor to fix a large space, compared to a small bedroom. Drying time is particular importance here, as bigger room will take longer to dehumidify.

  1. Type of Water

The type of water in your home can drastically affect the cost of repairs. For example, if the water in the area appears murky in color, this could indicate that the water is contaminated. Contaminated water is more difficult to clean due to potentially hazardous materials within the water, whereas water that is clear can cleaned with fewer safety precautions.

  1. Damaged Building Materials

Some materials require more restoration work than others. Water damaged hardwood floors are often easier and take much less time to repair compared to carpets. The cost of replacement materials, as well as whether restoration requires an exact match can also be a factor.

If your house has experienced flooding, it’s essential to seek out help from a company that specializes in water damage cleanup in order to get an accurate estimate of the cost and to identify long term solutions.

For water damage restoration and cleanup services, please call us SERVPRO of Bellaire  at (713) 266-9294

WHY TIME = MONEY AFTER A WATER DAMAGE

7/18/2022 (Permalink)

It’s very important to act quickly after your home has been struck by water damage and flooding. The first 24 to 48 hours are critical. The more time that goes by before extraction and drying process begins, the more damage the property will endure. If you act fast and get residential water damage restoration service on the scene to clean up and dry out your house, you will have the greater chance of saving your possessions and avoid further damage from rot, mold and bacteria.

Fast Response is the single most critical factor in restoring water damaged materials. SERVPRO of Bellaire averages of 1-hour response time for all emergency service calls. The longer the moisture is present, the more time for building to absorb and consequently breakdown structure. When water damage affects your home, it can travel through walls, under floorboards and around all surrounding materials. When water is allowed to sit, it will begin to saturate everything around it. Structural materials, like wood and drywall absorb water, they will start to swell. Cracking and deterioration will begin to occur once full saturation is achiever. If water is not dried completely as quickly as possible, water will spread to the materials and will cause a structural damage and microbial growth.

Carpet and carpet pad is like a sponge, soaking up water and bacteria. If you experience storm and flood damage to your home call SERVPRO of Bellaire at (713) 266-9294. We know how important quick response to water damage is, that’s why we are reliable 24/7 for immediate assistance.

Hurricane Preparedness Tips on a Budget

Hurricane season began on June 1st. Are you prepared? It doesn’t take much to be prepared and it does not have to be expensive to gather the supplies needed for your hurricane kit. Check out these budget friendly hurricane preparedness tips so you are not caught off guard.

TIP NO. 1:Do not panic. My favorite weatherman always says don’t freak out unless he tells us to.  Sometimes a storm looks real bad a week away and then can go a totally different direction. I always love when they just break down or go back into the ocean.

Here are the basic supplies and how to get them as frugally as possible.

Water

You need one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation. This does not need to be store bought bottled water. Water out of your tap is fine. Fill up empty bottles and jugs and freeze. I start collecting empty bottles (2-liter bottles, water bottles, etc.) starting in May and then if a storm is approaching I will fill them and put them in the freezer. Fill up buckets and cleaned trash cans for water to be used for flushing and basic cleaning. You can also plug and fill sinks and tubs for this same purpose.

Food

You need at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for each person in your family. Canned pasta, soup, granola bars, cereal are best. You are basically looking for food that does not necessarily need to be heated and does not need to be refrigerated once opened. It is best to stock up on what you like at the beginning of the hurricane season and then put into your cupboards in at the end of the season.

You also will need a manual can opener.

Staying Informed

You should have a Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both. Make sure your devices such as laptops, tablets, phone, and external chargers are all charged up.

Lights

Flashlights and extra batteries. The Dollar Tree sells flashlight batteries. While not the best batteries, they do work and will work for as long as they are needed for the hurricane. Plus, you can buy several packs.  I also stock up on matches (have them stored in a waterproof container) and candles.

First Aid Kit

Other Important Items

  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Local maps, your local Triple AAA will have them for free for AAA members
  • Books, games, puzzles and other activities for children
  • List of all medications for everyone in the family

Things to Have All Year Round

  • Weather proof security box with important documents such as birth certificates, insurance policies, etc.
  • Renters and homeowners insurance, including flood damage. During the hurricane season have those policy numbers and contact information handy.
  • Candles

Most of these items can be kept in a storage tote in the garage or if you are in an apartment like me, in a closet. Once a hurricane is forecasted many places offer access to free sand bags so you can help protect your home from flooding.

Flood Watch, Warning, or Advisory: Know the Difference

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Flooding often occurs following a hurricane or several days of sustained rain. Flash floods occur suddenly, due to rapidly water along a stream or low-lying area. To help you know when to expect to flood, the National Weather Service or your local weather service issues flood watches, warnings, and advisories. But what are the differences between them? Let’s find out below.

  1. Flood Advisory
  • It is the mildest level of a flood notification. It means that flood may be possible due to a problematic weather event, but the flooding is expected to be less severe if it occurs. Stay tuned to your local radio or TV station to stay informed.
  1. Flood Watch
  • Is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It doesn’t mean flooding will occur, but you should be prepared. This has a higher likelihood of flooding than advisory.
  1. Flood Warning
  • Is issued when a hazardous weather event that may cause a flood is imminent or underway.
  1. Flash Flood Warning
  • Is a sudden, intense flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring.

Remember, if you are under a flood warning, seek shelter right away, and don’t forget to protect your property from flooding.

If you experience damage to your home or business during severe weather or storm events, you can depend on SERVPRO of Bellaire. For comprehensive 24/7 residential and commercial restoration and cleanup services, you can count on the experience of our team. Call us SERVPRO of Bellaire at (713) 266-9294.

Old Water damage VS New Water Damage

7/15/2022 (Permalink)

Old Water damage VS New Water Damage

Water damage is a nightmare for any homeowners. It is known to be the most common form of property damage because of the numerous ways that it can happen. It can happen everywhere. No matter how strong of cement your building or property has used in process, water damage can make anything and everything look bad.

Water damage restoration experts understand the issues that water damage presents, especially when it isn’t in your sight. When discovered, water spots are clues that indicate a leaky pipe or condensation that is generating the problem. Even though it impossible to know exactly how long your water damage issues have lingered, here are steps you can take if your water damage is old or new.

  1. Review the house’s history

The first step of determining how old water spots are figuring out if your property has recently experienced any damage. When was the last time your home went through any storms or flooding? It is important to understand what is new and what is old because smaller leaks can take months to appear.

  1. Touch the water spot

Newer water spots will be wet and yet when you touch them, you will be able to feel that your drywall or ceiling is strong. Water damage drywall or water damage ceiling spot will be mushy and squishy because material have soaked up a fair amount of water.

  1. Inspect your home’s building materials

It is important to know what materials your walls and ceilings are composed of because thick paint or tiles trap water more easily than thin ones. Small water spot can indicate extensive damage.

We at SERVPRO of Bellaire, we can fix drywall water damage. For all your water damage restoration needs, get in touch with us. When there’s a leak that you cannot detect, it is crucial to contact an expert like us. Call us at (713) 266-9294.

Avoid Mold Hazards

7/19/2021 (Permalink)

Mold Damage Mold Damage

A water-damaged property requires special attention to avoid or correct a mold explosion. Molds produce spores which spread easily through the air, and they form new mold growths (colonies) when they find the right conditions: moisture, nutrients (nearly anything organic) and a place to grow.

Mold can damage materials and health. The longer mold is allowed to grow, the greater the risk and the harder the cleanup. So as soon as the floodwaters recede and it is safe to return, don’t delay cleanup and drying.

SERVPRO of Bellaire has fully trained and licensed professionals to identify any potential health-affecting molds and the expertise to remove and clean any mold issues you may have. Remember SERVPRO "Like it never even happened."

Ten Tips for Homeowners on the Care of Water-Damaged Family Heirlooms and Other Valuables

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

If the object is still wet, rinse with clear water or a fine hose spray. Clean off dry silt and debris from your belongings with soft brushes or dab with damp cloths. Try not to grind debris into objects; overly energetic cleaning will cause scratching. Dry with a clean, soft cloth. Use plastic or rubber gloves for your own protection.

Air dry objects indoors if possible. Sunlight and heat may dry certain materials too quickly, causing splits, warping, and buckling. If possible, remove contents from wet objects and furniture prior to drying. Storing damp items in sealed plastic bags will cause mold to develop. If objects are to be transported in plastic bags, keep bags open and air circulating.

The best way to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew is to reduce humidity. Increase air flow with fans, open windows, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. Moderate light exposure (open shades, leave basement lights on) can also reduce mold and mildew.

Remove heavy deposits of mold growth from walls, baseboards, floors, and other household surfaces with commercially available disinfectants. Avoid the use of disinfectants on historic wallpapers. Follow manufacturers' instructions but avoid splattering or contact with objects and wallpapers as disinfectants may damage objects.

Note: If objects are broken or begin to fall apart, place all broken pieces, bits of veneer, and detached parts in clearly labeled, open containers. Do not attempt to repair objects until completely dry or, in the case of important materials, until you have consulted with a professional conservator.

Documents, books, photographs, and works of art on paper may be extremely fragile when wet; use caution when handling. Free the edges of prints and paper objects in mats and frames, if possible. These should be allowed to air dry. Rinse mud off wet photographs with clear water, but do not touch surfaces. Sodden books and papers should also be air dried or kept in a refrigerator or freezer until they can be treated by a professional conservator.

Textiles, leather, and other "organic" materials will also be severely affected by exposure to water and should be allowed to air dry. Shaped objects, such as garments or baskets, should be supported by gently padding with toweling or uninked, uncoated paper. Renew padding when it becomes saturated with water. Dry clean or launder textiles and carpets as you normally would.

Remove wet paintings from the frame, but not the stretcher. Air dry, face up, away from direct sunlight.

Furniture finishes and painting surfaces may develop a white haze or bloom from contact with water and humidity. These problems do not require immediate attention; consult a professional conservator for treatment.

Rinse metal objects exposed to flood waters, mud, or silt with clear water and dry immediately with a clean, soft cloth. Allow heavy mud deposits on large metal objects, such as sculpture, to dry. Caked mud can be removed later.

Hurricane season officially started on June 1st and will end on November 30th, 2021. SERVPRO of Bellaire wants to makes sure you are prepared this hurricane season. Follow the tips below this hurricane season:

Water, canned food, charcoal, necessary medications, toiletries and anything else you may need if you cannot get to the store for several days.

  1. Make a Disaster Kit

Many stores run out of necessities like water, batteries, and other supplies when a storm is going to make landfall. Buy supplies before a storm is on the way, so you have everything you need. Make a disaster readiness kit and include the items below:

  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Copies of important documents
  • Cash
  • Fully charged backup cell batteries or a portable charger
  • Battery operated radio
  • Candles
  • Medications
  • First aid kit
  • Water (several cases)
  • Canned food
  • Pet food
  1. Make a Plan

Create a disaster readiness plan with your family. Figure out where you will go if you need to evacuate. Create a list of important phone numbers. Make sure each member of the family is accounted for in the plan and knows what to do. Plan for pets too, as pets are often forgotten in storm preparations and many pets are lost each hurricane season.

  • Water Heater Overflow
  • Rising Water from Flooding
  • Roof Leaks
  • Water from a Broken Window
  • Toilet or Bathtub Overflow
  • Air Conditioner Drip Pan Overflow

  • Fire Related Water Damage

These are a few of the many ways a SERVPRO customer may experience a water damage. SERVPRO of Bellaire customers know who to call when they experience a water loss. The team is specially trained to properly handle water loss damage.

Water Damage: Mold can Grow Within 24-48 Hours

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

It is extremely important to have a reputable company like SERVPRO of Bellaire handle water damage, as the threat of potentially hazardous mold can develop as soon as 24-48 hours after the original water damage.

When a water loss occurs, humidity levels are high. The team at SERVPRO of Bellaire uses specialized equipment like dehumidifiers to dry properties and reduce the humidity levels. This is an extremely important part of cleanup after water damage.

Normal drying methods are simply not enough to reduce the humidity levels in a home after a major water loss. Mold is able to grow behind cabinets, walls and under flooring quickly, so the threat has to be handled by professionals who know how to properly dry flooring, walls, and other fixtures in the property.

Differences between Black Water and Grey Water damage.

7/6/2021 (Permalink)

Both grey water and black water are types of wastewater. It’s just that grey water is the result of water being used for household purposes, like cleaning and washing clothes, while black water contains feces and urine and other bodily wastes. Grey water can be easily recycled as doesn’t contain that much bacteria compared to black water. Black water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Grey water and black water are also treated differently. Black water needs a more intensive treatment to kill the disease carrying bacteria present. Grey water can quickly degrade into black water if left untreated. If left untreated, mold can develop and create health effects above and beyond just the contaminated water!

What is "Gray" Water Damage?

7/6/2021 (Permalink)

Gray water is water that is slightly contaminated, either because of the nature of the source or because of neglect. For example, clean water can become “gray” water if it is left untreated for an extended period time. When a toilet or washing machine overflows, the resulting water would be considered gray because of its source. Any type of water that has been used or in any way contaminated is hazardous because of the microbes that may be present. If you want to begin the cleaning and drying process before the restoration service arrives, you should wear gloves in order to prevent your skin from touching the water so you do not spread any microbes. However, for best results, let the professionals at SERVPRO of Bellaire take care of work and put your mind at ease!

Water damage is always present with fire damage because the flames have to be extinguished. Often the damage caused by the sprinklers in a building is much more significant than the initial fire damage.

Smoke Damage

Soot from a fire can be found in every room of a house that has been badly burned, even those rooms that were not burnt. Often homeowner's belongings, furniture, clothes in drawers, important documents, paintings, and more are completely covered in charcoal black soot. Some items are not salvageable and the items that are have to be properly cleaned or the soot can permanently destroy them.

Mold Damage

After experiencing a house fire, the water damage has to be professionally handled, because when it is not properly dried mold can grow. Mold is a toxin that can cause numerous potential health effects for those living in the property. It is important to make sure the water damage is taken care of by professionals like those at SERVPRO of Bellaire.

Six Common Types of Fire Damage to Homes

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

Thunderstorm lightning fire to the roof of the home Thunderstorm lightning fire to the roof of the home
  1. Class A Fire Damage: Fire damage from a Class A fire is the result of a fire involving flammable solids, including, various plastics, paper, rubber, wood, and cloth.
  2. Class B Fire Damage: Class B fire damage consists of damage as a result of flammable liquids or solids that can become liquefied. This includes gasoline and various forms of petrol, oil, various waxes and plastics, and paint. However, fires caused by cooking oils and fats don’t count as Class B.
  3. Class C Fire Damage: A Class C fire damage is one involving flammable gasses, including hydrogen, propane, butane, and natural gas.
  4. Class D Fire Damage: Class D fire damage consists of fires caused by combustible metals. This may include magnesium, potassium, and sodium.
  5. Class E Fire Damage: Class E is fire damage that results from the factors in both Class A and Class B. The difference being, Class involves the introduction of electrical elements, which makes fighting the fire and the resulting damage very different from Class A and Class B.
  6. Class F Fire Damage: Class F is a fire that results from cooking oils and fats. This type of fire differs from Class B because these fires are significantly hotter and the damage more severe.

SERVPRO Customer on Experiencing a House Fire

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Cleanup

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Home Fire Statistics from SERVPRO of Bellaire

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

2021 Hurricane Season Ready-Plan

6/8/2021 (Permalink)

2021 Hurricane season has officially arrived. The season began on June 1st and will end on November 30th, 2021. SERVPRO of Bellaire wants to make sure Harris County Residents are prepared this hurricane season. Here are 3 tips that residential and commercial property owners can take to better prepare for the 2021 hurricane season:

  1. Stock-up on Necessities

Began stocking up on the items that are critical to your daily needs if you were to be without power and/or unable to get to the store for several days; such as canned food, charcoal, necessary medications, toiletries, batteries.

  1. Make a Disaster Kit

Many stores run out of necessities like water, batteries, and other supplies when a storm is going to make landfall. Buy supplies before a storm is on the way, so you have everything you need. Make a disaster readiness kit and include the items below:

  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Copies of important documents
  • Cash
  • Fully charged backup cell batteries or a portable charger
  • Battery operated radio
  • Candles
  • Medications
  • First aid kit
  • Water (several cases)
  • Canned food
  • Pet food
  1. Develop a Plan

Create a disaster readiness plan with your family that, 1. maps out where you will go if you need to evacuate. 2. Create a written or typed list of important phone numbers. 3. Assign each person or family member with a pre-determined task or direction(s) so that everyone will be accounted for and know what to do. 4. Come up with a plan for pets too, as pets are often forgotten in storm preparations and many pets are lost each hurricane season.

If you experience flooding or storm related damage, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Bellaire at 713-266-9294.

About Coronavirus

The CDC is responding to an outbreak of a respiratory disease caused by a novel (new) coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) that was first detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China and has spread to 60 locations internationally (as of this publication), including cases in the United States. The virus known as “coronavirus disease 2019” (abbreviated “COVID-19”)i is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person or through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.ii

Scope of Cleanup Protocol

SERVPRO professionals can perform a proactive cleanup that involves facility or structure cleaning and disinfection where the customer states that there is no active known threat of COVID-19 contamination or exposure. The customer will be required to acknowledge that cleaning and disinfecting will only apply to the current state of the structure and contents. The structure would not be protected from future COVID-19 contamination if an infected person was to enter and occupy the building.

Cleanup Scope of Work and Planning

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and tables at a minimum.iii These same surfaces are mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces as welliv, including:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving and Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and rugs
  • Stair Handrails
  • Elevator Cars
  • Playground Equipment
  • Fitness Equipment
  • Restaurants
  • Industrial Spaces

iv https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/guidance-business-response.html

Cleanup and Disinfecting Procedures

Cleanup procedures generally include cleaning of porous and non-porous surfaces, disinfecting of non-porous surfaces, cleaning and disinfecting of equipment, tools, and/or supplies used for cleanup process, and disposal of waste.

The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line carry the EPA-approved emerging pathogens claims. While there is currently no product tested against this particular strain of the coronavirus, we are following all guidelines as provided by the CDC and local authorities.

Mold? Signs of Water Problems?

4/25/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Bellaire 713-266-9294.

Does Your Home Have a Mold Problem?

4/24/2019 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Residents: Follow these Mold Safety Tips if You Suspect Mold

4/22/2019 (Permalink)

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Bellaire for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

About Our Mold Remediation Services

SERVPRO of Bellaire specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it’s a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Seeing Signs of Mold Growth

4/22/2019 (Permalink)

Major Mold Issues.

Visible mold growth might seem like an obvious sign of mold. However, many people don't notice small amounts of mold growth or they think it's just soot or dirt. Sometimes people simply ignore visible mold in their house.

If you can see mold growth, even if it's only small, you should take action immediately. Small mold patches can spread and the fact that there is any mold shows that the conditions in your home are right for mold to grow.
If you don't take care of mold it will soon become a bigger problem. Visible mold growth could also be a sign that there is a much larger mold colony growing hidden away from view.

Sometimes you might not realize there is mold in your house, especially if it is unusual looking mold. Some mold growth looks white and thread-like. Other mold appears as clusters of small black spots. Mold can be black, gray-brown, gray-green or white in color. Mold growing behind wallpaper made of vinyl can even appear orange, pink or purple.

Untreated Water Leaks Can Cause Mold

4/18/2019 (Permalink)

This photo shows the SERVPRO of Bellaire properly drying a property after a water loss.

If you have experienced a water leak there is a good chance that you have mold growing in your home around the area where the leak occurred. It is important to remember that even condensation can cause mold to grow in humid climates.

Mold growth from leaks can often be hidden. If the leak was behind a wall or other surface then any mold will probably be hidden behind the surface too. Even if the leak was not behind a surface there could still be mold hidden out of view behind a wall or other surface from water which seeped through.

Often mold is found in air vents, behind sheet rock, under flooring and in insulation. Many times, when mold is present in these places the homeowner is not aware that they are living with the potentially hazardous toxin. If you suspect there could be mold in your home call SERVPRO of Bellaire.
