Hurricane Preparedness Tips on a Budget

Hurricane season began on June 1st. Are you prepared? It doesn’t take much to be prepared and it does not have to be expensive to gather the supplies needed for your hurricane kit. Check out these budget friendly hurricane preparedness tips so you are not caught off guard.

TIP NO. 1:Do not panic. My favorite weatherman always says don’t freak out unless he tells us to.  Sometimes a storm looks real bad a week away and then can go a totally different direction. I always love when they just break down or go back into the ocean.

Here are the basic supplies and how to get them as frugally as possible.

Water

You need one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation. This does not need to be store bought bottled water. Water out of your tap is fine. Fill up empty bottles and jugs and freeze. I start collecting empty bottles (2-liter bottles, water bottles, etc.) starting in May and then if a storm is approaching I will fill them and put them in the freezer. Fill up buckets and cleaned trash cans for water to be used for flushing and basic cleaning. You can also plug and fill sinks and tubs for this same purpose.

Food

You need at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for each person in your family. Canned pasta, soup, granola bars, cereal are best. You are basically looking for food that does not necessarily need to be heated and does not need to be refrigerated once opened. It is best to stock up on what you like at the beginning of the hurricane season and then put into your cupboards in at the end of the season.

You also will need a manual can opener.

Staying Informed

You should have a Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both. Make sure your devices such as laptops, tablets, phone, and external chargers are all charged up.

Lights

Flashlights and extra batteries. The Dollar Tree sells flashlight batteries. While not the best batteries, they do work and will work for as long as they are needed for the hurricane. Plus, you can buy several packs.  I also stock up on matches (have them stored in a waterproof container) and candles.

First Aid Kit

Other Important Items

  • Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  • Local maps, your local Triple AAA will have them for free for AAA members
  • Books, games, puzzles and other activities for children
  • List of all medications for everyone in the family

Things to Have All Year Round

  • Weather proof security box with important documents such as birth certificates, insurance policies, etc.
  • Renters and homeowners insurance, including flood damage. During the hurricane season have those policy numbers and contact information handy.
  • Candles

Most of these items can be kept in a storage tote in the garage or if you are in an apartment like me, in a closet. Once a hurricane is forecasted many places offer access to free sand bags so you can help protect your home from flooding.

If your home or business has STORM DAMAGE we can help. – [SERVPRO of Bellaire, 713-266-9294]

Flood Watch, Warning, or Advisory: Know the Difference

Flood Watch, Warning, or Advisory: Know the Difference

Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters. Flooding often occurs following a hurricane or several days of sustained rain. Flash floods occur suddenly, due to rapidly water along a stream or low-lying area. To help you know when to expect to flood, the National Weather Service or your local weather service issues flood watches, warnings, and advisories. But what are the differences between them? Let’s find out below.

  1. Flood Advisory
  • It is the mildest level of a flood notification. It means that flood may be possible due to a problematic weather event, but the flooding is expected to be less severe if it occurs. Stay tuned to your local radio or TV station to stay informed.
  1. Flood Watch
  • Is issued when conditions are favorable for flooding. It doesn’t mean flooding will occur, but you should be prepared. This has a higher likelihood of flooding than advisory.
  1. Flood Warning
  • Is issued when a hazardous weather event that may cause a flood is imminent or underway.
  1. Flash Flood Warning
  • Is a sudden, intense flood that can take from minutes to hours to develop. A flash flood warning is issued when a flash flood is imminent or occurring.

Remember, if you are under a flood warning, seek shelter right away, and don’t forget to protect your property from flooding.

If you experience damage to your home or business during severe weather or storm events, you can depend on SERVPRO of Bellaire. For comprehensive 24/7 residential and commercial restoration and cleanup services, you can count on the experience of our team. Call us SERVPRO of Bellaire at (713) 266-9294.

Ten Tips for Homeowners on the Care of Water-Damaged Family Heirlooms and Other Valuables

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

If the object is still wet, rinse with clear water or a fine hose spray. Clean off dry silt and debris from your belongings with soft brushes or dab with damp cloths. Try not to grind debris into objects; overly energetic cleaning will cause scratching. Dry with a clean, soft cloth. Use plastic or rubber gloves for your own protection.

Air dry objects indoors if possible. Sunlight and heat may dry certain materials too quickly, causing splits, warping, and buckling. If possible, remove contents from wet objects and furniture prior to drying. Storing damp items in sealed plastic bags will cause mold to develop. If objects are to be transported in plastic bags, keep bags open and air circulating.

The best way to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew is to reduce humidity. Increase air flow with fans, open windows, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers. Moderate light exposure (open shades, leave basement lights on) can also reduce mold and mildew.

Remove heavy deposits of mold growth from walls, baseboards, floors, and other household surfaces with commercially available disinfectants. Avoid the use of disinfectants on historic wallpapers. Follow manufacturers' instructions but avoid splattering or contact with objects and wallpapers as disinfectants may damage objects.

Note: If objects are broken or begin to fall apart, place all broken pieces, bits of veneer, and detached parts in clearly labeled, open containers. Do not attempt to repair objects until completely dry or, in the case of important materials, until you have consulted with a professional conservator.

Documents, books, photographs, and works of art on paper may be extremely fragile when wet; use caution when handling. Free the edges of prints and paper objects in mats and frames, if possible. These should be allowed to air dry. Rinse mud off wet photographs with clear water, but do not touch surfaces. Sodden books and papers should also be air dried or kept in a refrigerator or freezer until they can be treated by a professional conservator.

Textiles, leather, and other "organic" materials will also be severely affected by exposure to water and should be allowed to air dry. Shaped objects, such as garments or baskets, should be supported by gently padding with toweling or uninked, uncoated paper. Renew padding when it becomes saturated with water. Dry clean or launder textiles and carpets as you normally would.

Remove wet paintings from the frame, but not the stretcher. Air dry, face up, away from direct sunlight.

Furniture finishes and painting surfaces may develop a white haze or bloom from contact with water and humidity. These problems do not require immediate attention; consult a professional conservator for treatment.

Rinse metal objects exposed to flood waters, mud, or silt with clear water and dry immediately with a clean, soft cloth. Allow heavy mud deposits on large metal objects, such as sculpture, to dry. Caked mud can be removed later.

SERVPRO of Bellaire: Hurricane Preparations

7/13/2021 (Permalink)

Hurricane season and storm damage go hand in hand! Hurricane season and storm damage go hand in hand!

Hurricane season officially started on June 1st and will end on November 30th, 2021. SERVPRO of Bellaire wants to makes sure you are prepared this hurricane season. Follow the tips below this hurricane season:

  1. Stock-up on Necessities

Water, canned food, charcoal, necessary medications, toiletries and anything else you may need if you cannot get to the store for several days.

  1. Make a Disaster Kit

Many stores run out of necessities like water, batteries, and other supplies when a storm is going to make landfall. Buy supplies before a storm is on the way, so you have everything you need. Make a disaster readiness kit and include the items below:

  • Flashlight
  • Batteries
  • Copies of important documents
  • Cash
  • Fully charged backup cell batteries or a portable charger
  • Battery operated radio
  • Candles
  • Medications
  • First aid kit
  • Water (several cases)
  • Canned food
  • Pet food
  1. Make a Plan

Create a disaster readiness plan with your family. Figure out where you will go if you need to evacuate. Create a list of important phone numbers. Make sure each member of the family is accounted for in the plan and knows what to do. Plan for pets too, as pets are often forgotten in storm preparations and many pets are lost each hurricane season.

If you experience flooding or storm related damage call the professionals at SERVPRO of Bellaire at 713-266-9294.
